Rub a Dubbing up the wrong way!

A lot of records have pictures of naked women on them, the reason for this is the majority of the vinyl buying market are guys, and therefore, like boobs. The dynamics that exist between guy djs is a little more complicated than between any other combination of people, (generalisation a hoy!!)
Bloke DJ Vs Bloke DJ
I have no insight into this first hand but it is funny to talk to two different djs seperatly who work together for example and find out that in fact they hate eachother, but are civil. One had to stop working with the other one since he really wanted to hook him quite frequently. that is an example of one dj who has done everything he wants working under a dj who works in a glasgow club and loves playing cheesy shit, and always wondering what he can get out of people (what they can do for him) and the first guy knowing he has nothing to prove!!
that is an example of a power struggle!! (Alpha male mentality)
sometimes the guys have a mutual respect, maybe even friends, listening to eachothers records, maybe even going on together, quite cliquey but cool if you are one half of that set up
this is an example of back scratchers, (or buddies and gang up on less experienced djs)
these are only from observations. I genuinly think that as a girl you are exempt from these games but you pay the price in being put into another category.
I'm not saying all guy djs do this but I've met a few
A - Patronise you, because you don't pose a threat and probably don't know enough
B - chat you up, becuase you are a bird and he be a dj, simple.
C - assume you have accidently walked into the wrong record shop and are expecting you to say "where's the west life?, and where are all the cds???"
I'm not sure if I mentioned this but months ago i popped into 23rd precinct after some uni society launch party. one guy asked me to stick on an armand van heldan track, and I soon realised that I didnt't have a lot of "popular tracks" and kinda wanted them so I could crowd please.
so I popped in with a pop wish list and said to the guy
"hi I'm looking for some popular stuff and I know this shop is a bit more maintstreem"
Right the look of horror on his face was priceless, I started to laugh and said "Well more than Rub a dub anyway"
so which he got defensive and said
"well they only sell deep house"
I thought there was nothing wrong with that, but he was being a snob, but I think it was funny how much offense he took from that original statement, I WAS afterall looking for some older tracks, been out for a few months like. Rub a Dub is just too cool for school,
"Rub a Dub Records - Too cool for School" Allie May 2005
but really it is. the guys are friendly I know it's their job to sell you records but I love being given a big pile of records to sift through and then tell them what you thought was shyte and what you thought was smoking!!
23rd precinct do this aswell actually I love that bit of the buying experience, But I hate the way in which they tell you it's a big tune and wonder why you don't buy it.
I haven't been to rub a dub records in ages, a friend of mine saw john peel in there a while ago maybe a year ago now. ho ho ho, but then freaked out when he was walking along the street and there was big JP sitting at the window in a weather spoon's looking at his record (worried he might have thought he was following him)
But I never go there, well I do but seldom, (I felt more comfortable going there than 23rd precinct, it's daunting, ie 23rd was the latest record shop I tried out)
one time I was in Rub a Dub, the assistants asked me (because I'm never in) "so you just arrived in Glasgow?" heh heh
this is unrelated but being female and walking into a record shop avec un brass neck makes people wonder at the back of their minds, are you a famous female dj? they do I know it!!!!
need to go back there, some of my favourite tracks have been purchased in there.
there will be a website soon I think give it a shot!!
this started as a random generalisation about female djs and male djs but ended up with me bigging up the mighty rub a dub and damn right too
